The Baltic country that lies between the 20th and 28th longitude consists of the four historic regions of Courland, Livonia, Semmgallen and Latgale. From the 13th to 16th Century the land belonged to the Teutonic State. Slitere, the oldest of the three Latvian national parks, was founded in 1921, shortly after Latvia achieved national independence. In addition to its rich flora and fauna, the country boasts a 498 km Baltic Sea coast with sandy beaches, pine forests and fishing villages. One in three of today's 2.3 million inhabitants lives in the capital Riga. Besides the official language of Latvian, Russian and Latgalian is spoken in everyday life. The country has been a member of the European Union since 2004.

Die laengste mit dem Auto befahrbare Backsteinbruecke ueberquert den Fluss Venta in Kuldiga, Lettland. Sie wurde 1874 fertiggestellt. Nach ihrer Zerstoerung in 1915 wurde sie 1926 wieder aufgebaut und ist in die UNESCO Liste des Welterbes eingetragen.
