About 4.5 million people live in the Republic of Croatia, which has been independent since 1991. Its capital Zagreb is an important transportation hub between Central and Southeast Europe. The historic towns of Split and Dubrovnik were already recognised as a World Heritage Site in the 1970s. Croatia has a coastline of almost 1,800 kilometers which has made the country a popular holiday destination for decades. Of the more than 1,200 islands in the Adriatic Sea only 50 are inhabited. In addition to the ecologically protected coastal region, Croatia has eight national parks and eleven nature reserves where animals live which have been extinct elsewhere in Europe for decades. These include jackals, lynx and vultures.
